Carefully Crafted Timber
Our Craft
Abodo crafts timbers with lasting beauty that are safe for people and the environment. Many exterior timbers are harvested from unsustainable old growth forests or are treated with harmful chemicals. Our timbers stand the test of time, they are beautiful, durable and rapidly renewable. Formed in 2001 by the Gudsell family, Abodo remains a New Zealand-owned, family business with a purpose. Our Philosophy
Our design ethos has two core components:Lifetime beauty
Abodo timbers are crafted to be enjoyed for years to come. Designed to age with grace, our timbers have exceptional weatherability and maintain their durability and beauty for a lifetime. With tomorrow in mind
Our timbers are harvested from New Zealand’s FSC® certified rapidly renewable plantation forests. They are ethically crafted with respect from beginning to end – allowing us to meet today’s increasing needs without disadvantaging future generations.
Minimising our impact
We choose only the highest quality logs, which are then sawn in close proximity to the plantation. This means that transport related emissions are minimised and operational efficiencies are maximised.
Our strong partnerships with forest owners in New Zealand’s North Island ensure a consistent supply of high quality FSC® (FSC-C010962) certified logs.
Finishing touches
Wood coatings are typically produced to work over a broad range of timber, rather than work very well with specific timbers.
Abodo has developed a tested system of wood finishes that are designed to work synergistically with our timbers, ensuring high performance and simple maintenance.
Built to last
We work with architects, designers and builders to create beautiful natural structures with lifetime beauty.
At Abodo, we provide detailed specifications and direct support to ensure design and installation is done right, with pride.
Enjoy for years
Our timbers help create beautiful spaces for people to live and work, safely and sustainably. Timber spaces feel better, because they are.
Abodo timbers are crafted to be durable and long lasting. With simple yearly maintenance, their beauty evolves slowly with time. Their exceptional weatherability means our timbers are enjoyed for decades.
Product Abodo

Abodo’s premium weatherboard product made using FSC® certified New Zealand plantation timber, thermally modified for superior beauty and durability.
A renewable alternative to Western Red Cedar, Vulcan is New Zealand’s first carbon negative feature timber.
The thermal modification process used in its production results in a stable timber with low moisture content – meaning it won’t warp, cup or bleed.
This also makes Vulcan Cladding suitable for coating in dark colours, even in warm climates. Create clean lines using various profiles, including vertical shiplap and bevel back.
With a variety of coatings, finishes and profile options, Vulcan is perfect for bespoke architectural aesthetics and applications.
As the thermal modification process is preservative and chemical free, it is also safe and effective for interior applications and joinery.
Vulcan is manufactured with a patented process resulting in an engineered vertical grain orientation that reduces cracking and enables stable weathering long term.
Environmental Product Declaration and Declare Red List Free certified, each square metre of 20mm thick Vulcan Cladding stores 9.74 kg of carbon.

Create a lasting, naturally beautiful exterior space with Vulcan Decking, created from thermally modified, rapidly renewable, softwood timber.

With timber sourced from rapidly renewable New Zealand plantation forests, Abodo Vulcan Decking is a sustainable and natural choice.
For ultimate durability, the timber undergoes Abodo’s thermal modification process and is pressure treated with a low VOC organic preservative (OPX) that includes a water repellent and insecticide for termite zones. With a reeded face that provides enhanced weathering characteristics and grip under foot, this product is built to last.
The thermal modification process means Abodo Vulcan Decking has reduced resin content, resulting in enhanced stability through all weathers. The natural timber provides a beautiful, homogeneous brown tone that silvers off, suits a wide range of architectural styles.
Unlike most hardwoods, Vulcan Decking does not require pre-drilling. It’s easy to work with, cut and fix, making it a favoured material among professional and DIY builders alike.

Abodo’s Vulcan Panelling brings the warmth of wood to interior applications, such as ceilings, walls and feature eaves.

Created from thermally modified plantation timber, Abodo’s Vulcan Panelling is a lightweight, stable sarking timber with excellent thermal characteristics. It can be used to create a feature ceiling, eave or wall with the rich warmth and distinctive vertical grain of Vulcan.
The thermal modification process means this product is naturally durable and does not require any chemical preservatives, making it a healthy addition to a home’s interior.
To create a beautiful sense of balance throughout an interior, the natural beauty of Abodo Vulcan Panelling can be contrasted with hard materials such as metal, concrete and stone, and juxtaposed against richly coloured and textured window treatments and upholstery.
Available in brushed and smooth dressed finishes in a range of profiles, this product can be customised to suit a wide variety of architectural design styles.
